Who suffers - adults

Adults can suffer constipation at any time due to lack of exercise or fibre and a range of other reasons. But there are some circumstances in which it is more common.

Certain medications

Some medications can cause constipation as a side effect. These medications include some anti-depressants, some blood pressure medications, pain killers (codeine, morphine, oxycodone), calcium supplements and iron supplements. Your doctor or pharmacist will also be able to explain side effects, and if needed, suggest an alternative treatment.

Opioid pain medications (e.g. codeine) is a common cause of constipation and a laxative like MOVICOL® can be recommended for people to take when they begin taking the opioid.

Other health issues

People with certain health issues are more likely to suffer constipation symptoms, and it is something your doctor will be able to discuss with you. These events and conditions include:

  • Abdominal or gynaecological surgery
  • Diseases of the central nervous system
  • Haemorrhoids
  • Underactive thyroid
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Problems of the endocrine system

Pregnant women

Pregnancy causes many changes to the body, sometimes including constipation. A healthcare professional will be able to help diagnose and treat the problem. You should only use medications during pregnancy on the advice of a doctor or healthcare professional.

There is no experience of the use of MOVICOL during pregnancy and lactation. Pregnant women should always seek advice from their doctor when considering MOVICOL.

A doctor should be consulted immediately if blood is found in a stool, or there is sudden weight loss or vomiting, as these could be signs of a more serious underlying condition.
